Hi, my name is Steve Schadendorf and I’m a practicing adult neurologist in Pleasant Hill, California. I’ve been practicing adult neurology for the past 14 years. I have particular interest in vascular neurology as well as movement disorders and treatment of movement disorders with deep brain stimulation. My wife and I moved from Houston 14 years ago to California after training at Baylor College of Medicine. I chose neurology because it was the first subject in medical school that really clicked with me. The most interesting part of anatomy to me was dissecting the brain as well as all of the nerves and nervous system. We also had excellent mentors and one of the most interesting and informative classes during medical school involved neurology. Real life patients came in, our mentors were able to tell us what treatments were available as well as the process of diagnosing diseases in neurology.

A lot of neurology is problem solving and localizing the symptoms and signs on exam to a certain part of the nervous system. This localization is the basis of neurology and allows you to make diagnoses and then develop a treatment plan. The gratifying part of being a neurologist is being able to reassure and counsel patients going through what are typically terrifying or disabling conditions. While we may not have a lot of treatments to cure these diseases, we increasingly have more options to treat the symptoms. Neurology is an exciting area of medicine, and there’s been an explosion of research as well as treatments available for these conditions. Being involved with family members who may be caring for their loved ones with these diseases has also been very satisfying. I try to keep myself healthy by exercising every day. Most neurological diseases can be slowed by exercising, and I think it’s very important that I actually practice what I preach. I also enjoy spending time with my family and traveling. One of our favorite things to do is to travel outside of the country and see different cultures. Thank you for visiting Doctorpedia. I look forward to helping provide you additional information that empowers you to maintain your neurological health and understand your condition.
