An upper endoscopy, or also known as an EGD, is a common procedure in which the upper digestive tract is evaluated. This includes the esophagus, the stomach, as well as the first portion of the small intestine. The gastroenterologist typically inserts a thin flexible tube, which has a camera and light source, into the patient’s mouth and advances it into the esophagus, the stomach and the small intestine. The patient is typically sedated and comfortable during the exam. And in the procedure, biopsies or samples are taken to make diagnoses and colored images or pictures are also taken. The procedure can be done both in the ambulatory outpatient setting as well as in the hospital.
