Urinary tract infections are much more common in women than men. This is mainly because men have a much longer urethra than women. Also, because women have a shorter urethra, it’s easier for organisms that normally reside inside the vagina or around the rectal area can get up into the urinary tract. Approximately one in five women will develop a urinary tract infection at some point during her lifetime.
