Treatment of vocal cord dysfunction may take as little as two or three sessions of respiratory retraining, or it could take several months. Generally, the treatment is highly successful and results in a vastly improved quality of life for those who have suffered from chronic cough. One of the things that we often see with vocal cord dysfunction is that patients do well, they get another viral illness, and all the symptoms come back. The good news is people know how to treat it. They’ve had the respiratory retraining, they know what foods to avoid, they know what foods to take, and they can just immediately launch into these series of exercises and dietary and behavioral modifications.
