Although rare, because the immune system usually controls HPV infection, sometimes these infections can lead to cancer. This is particularly found in long-standing infections and most notably affects the genitalia, cervix, mouth and throat, but transformation can occur anywhere the HPV infection has been chronic. This and vaccination for HPV will be dealt with in another section.
