The biggest risk factor for the development of bladder cancer is cigarette smoke. Almost everyone knows about the association between lung cancer and cigarette smoking. Because the smoke toxins also enter the urine, and then the bladder is bathed with that urine over many decades, the bladder lining becomes prone to develop cancerous growths. In fact, at least half of all bladder cancers occur in cigarette smokers.

Other occupational exposures can be associated with developing bladder cancer, such as chemical dyes, leather manufacturing, paint, rubber, and has also been associated with arsenic levels in the drinking water.
