The risk of vulvar cancer is increasing, since it is often associated with the human papilloma virus, HPV. This is the same virus that increases the risk of cancer of the cervix. There are also some skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus that can also increase the risk of vulvar cancer. Chronic vulvar itching, age, and smoking are also risk factors for vulvar cancer. Maintaining sanitary habits, quitting smoking, practicing safe sex and limiting partners can all help lessen the risk of vulvar cancer.
