Altitude sickness can be prevented by adequately preparing for trips where you’ll be at a high altitude. First of all, drinking more water than you normally would helps prevent symptoms. Three to four quarts a day is a good number to start with. Acclimating yourself to the high altitude is also key. Stop at a slightly lower altitude at first for a day or two before you hit that 8,000 mark. And then, once you do get there, stop for another day or two before you go over 10,000 feet.
