Back pain is a very common symptom and need further investigation to find other causes. Osteoarthritis, which is an age related degeneration of the joint, could also cause chronic back pain. Back pain due to osteoarthritis is usually different from that of AS. Specifically, symptoms of osteoarthritis typically starts after the age of 50. They worsen with activity and are relieved with rest. On the other hand, injuries to the back and disc herniation could also cause sudden onset of back pain and typically last for less than three months, unlike AS, which causes chronic symptoms. Consulting with a rheumatologist could help make an early diagnosis.
