One of the biggest causes of atrial fibrillation is that excess alcohol use and we usually see this after the holidays where people are binge drinking and we see a lot of admissions for atrial fibrillations in the hospitals. Other risk factors for atrial fibrillation include if you have a chronic lung disease, if you’ve ever had any kind of procedures on your heart that can predispose you to atrial fibrillation. Also, thyroid illnesses – any abnormalities related to your thyroid – can lead to atrial fibrillation along with hypertension and diabetes.
