It’s very important when you have any of the symptoms associated with atrial fibrillation for you to go to see your doctor. Some of these symptoms, like I talked about earlier, include rapid heartbeat or what we call palpitations, shortness of breath (where you can’t catch your breath by taking just a couple of stairs), not being able to lay flat in bed because you can’t breathe or swelling in your legs. When you have any of these symptoms, it’s very important to come to the doctor when you come to the doctor, you should let them know what symptoms you’re having and let them know that you’re concerned that you might be having an irregular rhythm. So what your doctor will do is check your vitals, check your pulse, and get an EKG. An EKG is the way you make the diagnosis for atrial fibrillation.
