A transthoracic echocardiogram (or an ultrasound of the heart) really just takes a good look at your heart, looking at the structures and your valves just to make sure that everything is normal. One of the important roles of a transthoracic echocardiogram is also looking for blood clots that could potentially cause a stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
