Avoiding infection with food during cancer treatment

As you may already know, some cancer treatments make it more likely for you to develop an infection. For this reason, you or your caretaker need to take a special care in the way food is handled and prepared. For example, make sure to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Leftovers need to be in the fridge as soon as you’re done eating. Before eating any raw vegetables or fruits, be sure to scrub with a brush in warm water. Soak berries and other foods that are not easily scrubbed in water, then rinse before eating. And the same applies to any fruits or vegetables with peels or a rough surface like oranges and avocados. The most important step is to wash your hands, knives and countertops before and after you prepare food. Don’t forget to separate your cutting boards, depending on the food. The cutting board you use for meats should not be the same one you use for fruits and vegetables.
