Borderline personality disorder can manifest itself in many ways based on the individual’s presentation. So for example, some people with borderline personality disorders, there’s a intense suicidal ideation component. Some people who have borderline personality disorders, during times of acute stress, do actually develop psychotic episode. So a lot of the way that the person with the borderline personality disorder, the way they manifest, a lot of it also depends on the other disorders that individual may be having, comorbid disorders that can exacerbate their behavior. And one of the biggest things about the borderline personality disorder, people first start seeing some of the symptomology, more common symptomology, is this profound fear of abandonment. And how does that manifest itself? If they feel that they’re going to be abandoned by the person, whether real or imagined, they will actually abandon that person before that person abandons them. And once that actually happens, they will try to recoup, try to make amends. So hence the person in a relationship with a borderline personality disordered individual, that person has a feeling as if they’re walking on eggshells. They never really know where they stand with this individual, because at one moment, this person’s pushing you away, and the next moment, this person is grabbing onto you for dear life.
