Unfortunately, a lot of patients in the early stages have no symptoms. So it’s hard to know if they have cardiomyopathy. Later in the stages of cardiomyopathy, as the patient starts to develop heart failure, the symptoms manifest as shortness of breath, cough or congestion or swelling of the lower extremities. One symptom that I think everybody should pay attention to that I pay attention to in my clinic that helps me diagnose certain conditions such as ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy is exertional symptoms, whether that’s exertional chest pain, exertional shortness of breath, or just exertional fatigue that progresses over time could help you diagnose things at a earlier stage.
