Other causes of nasal congestion can combine with chronic sinusitis to further block the airways. Of particular note are the common cold, which can actually be a root cause of chronic sinusitis, and the flu, which can seriously exacerbate symptoms such as headache, fever, weakness. More recently, COVID-19 has been observed to have some of the same symptoms as chronic sinusitis, giving patients new cause for concern, should they lose their sense of smell or taste.
