One reason you may need a diverting ileostomy would be to divert the stream of stool from the anastomosis or the connection. This allows the anastomosis to heal without stool or bacteria passing through it. And if you did develop, say, a small leak or a small defect in that connection, a diverting ileostomy may decrease the reaction or the effects or the systemic effects that would occur with this defect in your connection.
