These medications do come with their side effects. Blood pressure medications can need to be titrated accordingly to each patient to prevent low blood pressure. Some of the cholesterol medications can cause liver damage or changes in your blood tests that will show elevated liver enzymes, as well as increased muscle breakdown. Your doctor will monitor all of these blood tests and may need to stop the drug if they’re causing these problems. Other classes of drugs that cause problems can be ACE inhibitors. Your doctor will monitor your electrolytes, specifically your potassium, as well as your kidney function, to make sure that you’re on the right dose. In addition, ACE inhibitors commonly can cause a cough and some patients may need to be switched to another medication if they’re experiencing these symptoms.
