In refractory disease, meaning if all medications fail, there is the option for surgical treatment. This would involve what’s called an LVAD or a ventricular assist device. Also commonly known as an artificial heart that can help blood pump through your body despite your weak heart. This is usually used as a bridge to transplant. Now you should know that a heart transplant is a very rare surgery and not many hearts are transplanted each year. Even the leading centers in the country may only do up to 40 heart transplants in a single year.
