Lifestyle has a big impact on developing atherosclerosis. A sedentary lifestyle, smoking, poor diet, are all contributing factors to developing atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death amongst all ethnicities in the United States, including African Americans. Environmental factors, such as pollution, also increases the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis. Certain conditions such as lupus, inflammatory diseases, Crohns, et cetera, increase the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis. In women, certain conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, early menopause before the age of 40, increase the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis.
