How do we avoid getting a DVT? It’s always a good idea to stay well-hydrated and drink adequate amount of water for your body type and body weight, engaging in regular exercise and avoiding being stationary or sedentary, avoiding smoking, reviewing your medications with your doctor to see if any of these medications can increase your predisposition, reviewing family history. If you are on certain medications, such as oral contraceptives for pregnancy or for hormone replacement, it’s important also to discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits, because these can cause DVTs.
