The most common treatment for DVT is blood thinners. Now, 10 years ago, we only had one choice, which was injectable Lovenox, and then Coumadin. But over the last decade, we’ve had multiple studies showing newer agents what we call non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants, NOACs, that have been approved to treat DVT and PE without need for injections. And a lot of these treatments have facilitated the ability to treat patients outpatient without the need for hospitalization, where a patient could be diagnosed, and if stable, be started on oral treatment and followed outpatient.
