The cause of Dupuytren’s disease is largely hereditary. Therefore there’s not much that can be done preventatively to minimize symptoms. However, one of the unique features of Dupuytren’s disease is that in patients who have a genetic predisposition, they may not always exhibit any physical findings or symptoms until there’s been a history of trauma to the hand, the fall on the hand with soft tissue trauma or broken bone, or sometimes surgery to the hand, which can produce trauma to the tissues can activate Dupuytren’s disease in patients who were previously unaware that they had that genetic makeup. However, there are no other factors such as lifestyle, diet, medication, exposure, or other medical conditions associated with Dupuytren’s disease.
