The one thing I’m certain to tell patients with Dupuytren’s disease about their condition is that the only predictable thing about Dupuytren’s disease is its unpredictability. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to determine whether the condition will remain stable over a person’s lifetime or whether it will progress. If it does progress, it can do so very slowly or it can progress very rapidly. There are also patients who experience periods of progression followed by long periods of quiescence, where nothing will be changing. And then all of a sudden it will become active again, so that the condition stops and starts over either a short time or a long time. Therefore, we can’t tell patients what to expect in terms of whether their condition is going to get worse. And if so, how long that will take.
