DVT – Medications and Recovery

Transcript

After a DVT diagnosis, you should start taking the prescribed medications immediately. Be sure to make an appointment with your primary care team. If you’re taking warfarin, you may also need to start going to appointments at an anticoagulation clinic. Staying active is important when you have a blood clot. Continue to walk and go to work after a diagnosis, but be careful doing strenuous exercise. Consult with your primary care team about when it is okay to exercise or do strenuous work. If you have difficulty breathing, chest pain or increased pain in your affected extremity, go back to the ER. It sometimes takes a long time for DVT symptoms to go away. You may need to talk with your primary doctor if you’re concerned that things aren’t getting better as fast as you would like. To prevent DVT in the future, you should stop smoking. Consider changing therapies that include hormones and stay active, especially after surgeries.
