About half of people with epilepsy have no particular risk factor for getting seizures. At least not one that we can identify. The other half have a risk factor, like a prior head injury, a stroke, or a strong family history of seizures. Certain infections that may involve the brain like malaria can also cause seizures and epilepsy.
