Many of my patients ask me, “Why do I have epilepsy?” And honestly, about half of the time, I can answer that question and half of the time, I just have to throw up my hands and say, “I don’t know why.” We do know there are certain risk factors for developing epilepsy. Among them are having had a significant head injury or brain injury in the past, having had a stroke or a brain tumor in the past, or having a strong family history of epilepsy.
