So gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate into your joint, causing the inflammation intense pain of a gout attack. Urate crystals can form, again, when you have high uric acid level in your bloodstream. Now, normally the uric acid dissolves in your blood and passes through the kidneys into your urine. But sometimes either your body’s producing too much uric acid or your kidneys are not excreting out as much uric acid as needed. So when this happens, your uric acid, then the monosodium urate crystals will develop and they will deposit into the joint, causing the pain and the inflammation that we talked about. And oftentimes if you have enough of those urate crystals depositing, you can actually see them on the elbow, lumpy deposits. And that’s just from urate crystals depositing into your joint over long periods of time.
