Your treatments for your hair loss depend on the cause. For most hair loss cases, your doctor will recommend trying an over the counter medication like Rogaine or minoxidil, which is applied directly to the scalp. They may also prescribe, either separately or in conjunction, an oral medication like Finasteride, known as Propecia, which is designed to slow hair loss, and in some cases, cause new hair growth. This can only be used in men. In women, we can use something called spironolactone. Suppose your dermatologist or doctor believes an infection might be causing it. In this case, they may prescribe medications like a shampoo called ketoconazole that will treat the infection. Similarly, suppose they see you have certain deficiencies in your diet like iron that may be causing your hair loss. In that case, they will recommend you take specific supplements like iron or biotin that may help stop the hair loss. Also, they may be evaluating other prescription medications you’re taking that will cause the hair loss. Sometimes though, your doctor or dermatologist conclude that there may not be anything that can be done to prevent your hair loss, and it’s just something you have. If you’re concerned about going bald, they may recommend a surgical procedure such as a hair transplant surgery for a treatment option. There are several types of treatments of surgical hair loss that can be done that will help regrow hair on balding parts of your head.
