When you’re exposed to a trigger, a chemical process happens in the skin. Mast cells in your skin release histamine and other chemicals that cause the swelling and itching associated with hives. Other triggers include sudden temperature changes, vibrations such as holding a lawnmower or a motorcycle, or even exercise.
