Patients who cannot commit to monthly office visits and monthly blood tests should not take this medication. Additionally, if a patient is unwilling or unable to take the medication regularly, they should not start it. Women and girls who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take it, as there are known birth defects caused by isotretinoin.
