Lung Cancer – EGFR Mutation

One very important thing to know is that if you’re going to have surgery for your lung cancer, and it is a non-small cell lung cancer, you must check for EGFR mutations. Specifically, exon 21 mutation or exon 19 deletion. The reason for this is if you have a stage 1B to 3A lung cancer that is positive for one of these things, an approval just came out in December 2020, where you qualify for three years of adjuvant therapy to reduce your chance of it coming back. So your disease free survival is improved if you’re on an oral pill targeting the EGFR mutation for three years. This needs to be obtained on the tissue either before or after the surgery to see if you qualify.
