Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Many people think of shingles as chickenpox for adults, but this is inaccurate. It can be much more painful than chickenpox and lead to complications. In particular, shingles can cause chronic pain that lasts for many months and even longer after the initial rash goes away.
