These options have been reviewed previously: Discectomy. Discectomy is a procedure where a surgeon removes a disc fragment that is pressing on a nerve. Foraminotomy is a procedure where the surgeon opens the tunnel through which a nerve is passing as it leaves the spine. This creates extra space for the nerve. A laminotomy is a procedure where the surgeon removes a small part of the lamina, which is an outer covering of the spine to create more space for the nerve. A laminectomy is a procedure where the surgeon or moves the entire lamina.
