If tinnitus is caused by a temporary shift in hearing, say, for example, because there’s wax buildup in your ear canal, if you get the wax cleaned out, the tinnitus may go away. Or if you have a temporary shift in hearing, because you had some noise exposure, say you went to a loud concert and afterwards your ears were ringing for a few hours, that may go away on its own. However, if tinnitus is caused by something permanent, such as a permanent sensory neural hearing loss, which about 80% of the time, permanent sensory neural hearing loss and tinnitus go hand in hand, the tinnitus will not go away. It can only be managed and tinnitus would be permanent.
