Trochanteric Bursitis – Surgery

In very rare cases, some patients may benefit from a surgical procedure to help with their trochanteric bursitis. This, again, is focused more on the IT band than the trochanteric bursite itself. We do a bursectomy, however, at the same time as we actually take out part of the IT band in order to stretch it out and decrease that friction syndrome. This procedure is called a Tenex procedure and again, is very rare, and only used in a very small subset of patients. The mainstay of treatment is focused on conservative management, physical therapy and stretching of that IT band.
