Tuberculosis – Family Support

Transcript

Tuberculosis patients benefit from support from friends and family, including food while they’re isolated early in treatment, as well as encouragement, because taking daily medications for TB is quite difficult throughout the long course that’s required. In addition, those that come into close contact with patients with TB should themselves be screened for TB because that may give opportunities for prevention. For example, sharing the same air for up to 12 hours might put one at risk and may indicate that one should go for screening for latent tuberculosis infection. It is important to say that if you have latent tuberculosis infection, you cannot spread TB to others. And that TB is highly treatable. So that once you start treatment for active tuberculosis, your risk of spreading to others is almost minimal.
