A man would decide to have a vasectomy for the purposes of birth control. The tube that gets divided is called the vas deferens, and it’s the tube that carries sperm from the testicle out towards the outside world during ejaculations. By dividing this tube, ejaculation can still occur, but the ejaculate no longer contains sperm. Vasectomy is most commonly performed by a urologist, but some family physicians and also some general surgeons perform the procedure.
