The third treatment is radiation therapy. This treatment is administered by a radiation oncologist who does it in consultation with the urologist. This treatment, again, is directed usually for those who have intermediate to high risk prostate cancer. Generally, these patients may be a little bit older or may have other medical problems, which may limit their ability to tolerate some of the stresses associated with surgery. The treatment typically takes nine weeks. It’s administered in small doses, so as not to damage tissues in close proximity to the prostate, such as the bladder and the rectum.
