He received his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, completed preliminary surgical training at the University of North Carolina, and then completed emergency medicine training at the combined residency program of George Washington and Georgetown Universities in Washington, DC. His early academic career included leadership positions at the George Washington University, including GW Hospital Associate Trauma Director, Research Director of the Emergency Department, and Vice-Chair of the Institutional Review Board, charged with overseeing clinical research for the Medical Center. He has spoken and delivered local and Congressional testimony with a focus on key issues related to traffic safety and emergency preparedness.
