The exact cause of melanoma isn’t definitive, but familial disposition or genetic background has been implicated. Meaning that anyone with a family member with melanoma should be routinely evaluated. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps increases the risk of developing melanoma. The lighter a person’s skin type and the greater amount of ultraviolet greatly increases the chance of melanoma.
